Night 9,945 – March 26, 2010

an urban landscape on Oregon Ave. near Front Street in South Philadelphia. I sometimes wonder why certain locations are chosen for discarding unwanted possessions. These chairs must have been used at one time by someone, probably carefully placed in a sitting room. They have served their purpose so well they now have no purpose, useless stuff. But why here? This stuff has been here for a while. Does this place looks like it's OK to dump unwanted junk? I guess so. Sometimes I feel like this place.

Night 9,968– March 3, 2010

It’s the end of an era. That is the second Allen Iverson era. Bringing Allen back was a big mess, but the Sixers are such a big mess this is easily overlooked. The shame of it is, who cares and what’s the point.

Iverson is one of my favorite Sixers of all time and I would have enjoyed watching him play out his career here in Philadelphia. He is nowhere near the player he was but there is something about watching end his career. I don’t find it sad, I find it nostalgic; I can’t help remembering the player as he was, and there are always flashes of greatness. I remember Willie Mays ending his career with the Mets. Once I saw Mays hit a pinch hit home run for the Mets against the Phillies…what a thrill…and I hate the Mets.

Unfortunately, the Sixers are unwatchable. Iverson has countless faults but it’s not his fault this didn’t work. He has family issues and playing for this team is pointless. This whole situation is disappointing.

Here are my ten favorite Sixers in no particular order:

Wilt Chamberlain
Luke Jackson
Wally Jones
Julius Erving
Moses Malone
Andrew Toney
Charles Barkley
Allen Iverson
Chet Walker
Eric Snow

Night 9,969– March 2, 2010

I hate to see Jim Bunning being ripped in the press. I remember his perfect game for the Phillies on Fathers Day, 1964. He was a star on the baseball team I grew up with as a child. I can’t say I agree with him politically, but I can’t separate him from a part of my youth. He is family; I can’t turn my back on him. I believe he is the only member of the Senate in the Baseball Hall of Fame.

It’s official. I just heard an advertisement for a Tom Petty concert referring to the Wachovia Center as the Wells Fargo Center. See the link below:

http://cedmundmiller.wordpress.com/2008/10/06/the-banking-industry-as-i-understand-it/

Wells Fargo took over Wachovia a while ago, but as I understand it, they didn’t want their name on the building until the Sixers finish playing this year. There are a lot of nasty, negative things being said about banks but an association with the Sixers will be hard to overcome.

Night 9,971– February 28, 2010

There is no place to park in the city because of the snow, so I’ve been taking public transportation. I enjoy this. Today on the way home, I was hurrying from the Broad Street line to the 69th Street train; if you hurry you can get from one to the other without a wait. There were these two guys in front of me walking side by side chit chatting. They were blocking the way, which is not very wide. Two guys behind me scooted around them by walking on the yellow line next to the track. This yellow line is about two feet wide and is there to mark where you’re not suppose to stand so the train won’t hit you. After they went by I decided to pass. As I crossed onto the yellow line the guy nearest to me turns into me and almost knocks me onto the track. We look at each other and said we’re sorry for the contact then moved on. If I fell onto the track, I don’t know how I would have gotten back up. I missed the 69th Street train and had to wait another eight minutes.

I spent part of today looking for a battery for my Canon A1 camera. As it turns out, this was hard to find. I went to the stores where previously I noticed large displays of batteries, Home Depot, CVS, Target and such. It turns out these large displays only have 3 or 4 styles of batteries. Hundreds of batteries, in different brands, packaged in different quantities and they where all the same batteries.

On my fifth store, Radio Shack, I found the battery, a 6V for $4.34. I take it to the register to pay and the clerk asks me for my zip code and address. I give it to him then he asks my last name, then my first name. I’m mindless, so I just give him the information. When he asks for my phone number I question him about all the information he is asking for a $4.00 battery. He says he needs it to validate the receipt. Of course this is bull, but I need this battery. I don’t want to spend any more of my life searching for a battery. I’m not sensitive or secretive about my personal information, I have nothing to hide and I’m not afraid of people knowing what I do, where I go or what I like. Spam and telemarketing don’t really bother me. But the purpose of the accumulation of this information, does this generate money? Why would someone want to track what I do? I would throw off the numbers; I’m not an average consumer. It’s such a waste. It’s as if we do things just for something to do.

Today’s photograph is Luncheonette. This is Carmine’s Country Kitchen, 1301 S 11th St in Philadelphia, 11th near Wharton. This place is both famous and infamous in Philly. An insider, must go to place in South Philly, but beware, you must have an open mind. The food is mostly good sometimes, but it’s the experience that makes Carmine’s memorable. There’s the dog, there’s the attitude and there’s the obscene and offensive business card. Definitely an acquired Philly attitude place. Check out the 5 star and 1 star reviews at the link below.
